'a space' arts Seeking new Chairperson

‘a space’ arts is looking for a new chairperson to support its continuing growth with the re-launch of God’s House Tower this autumn and achievement of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisation status.

Current chair, Mick Smith, has worked in partnership with director Daniel Crow for almost 20 years, developing local artists, repurposing old spaces as public galleries or artist studios, and bringing a series of innovative cultural events to the people of Southampton
and beyond.

Now, having fulfilled a long-term ambition in securing major funding to develop the city’s flagship God’s House Tower into one of the UK’s most significant arts and heritage venues, along with becoming an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, Mick is setting off on charitable ventures anew in India.

“Mick has committed his experience and expertise to ‘a space’ since the organisation was established in 2000. He has been a hugely valued member of our team and will be missed; however the opportunity to work with a new chair will be fantastic,” said Daniel Crow. “2019 will be the most exciting year, not only for ‘a space’ and the artists we support, but for the people of Southampton in celebrating a great new arts and heritage centre in the heart of the Old Town.”

The organisation is looking for an experienced new chairperson, well versed in the charitable or not-for-profit sector, with a firm belief in the crucial role which arts and culture can play in reaching out to and enriching everyone within a diversified city community.

“Our fundamental aim is to develop God’s House Tower into a dynamic cultural centre which everyone in Southampton can be proud of,” said Daniel. “And while our core ethos of supporting and developing new artists remains, we also want to bring exciting and innovative events, exhibitions, seminars and workshops to the wider public across the city.

“We all look forward to working alongside a new chairperson who shares our beliefs and aims and can assist in taking the organisation to the next stage of its development.”
