knit the ... room?

Community, Free, In Person, Workshops

Saturday 6th August 2022 12:00pm - 4:00pm

God's House Tower, Town Quay Road, Southampton, SO14 2NY

Join us for an afternoon of knitting, talking, and covering objects in the knitted material, as knit the walls returns to GHT as part of our first anniversary celebrations.

Drawing on Virginia Woolf’s ‘A Room of One’s Own’ and Charlotte Perkins Gliman’s ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’, together, we will construct a knitted room for the upcoming exhibition in November, manifesting the domestic and the everyday.

If you have an item that is a vessel of your own stories – something that we could cover and then include in the exhibition, please bring it with you. perhaps a book, a utensil, a mug, a stool, a cuddly toy, a pan, a plant pot, a bag, a purse, a piece of clothing … it could be anything that holds your personal history.

All knitting materials are provided and the session is open to all abilities, from beginners to experienced knitters. Why not come along and find out more about ‘knit the walls’, a long term community knitting project that considers how the medieval walls of Southampton hold long forgotten stories.

Bring your friends, bring your family, bring your tales!
