Exhibition: They Will Not Take You Seriously
Exhibitions, Free, In Person
Friday 23rd August 10:00am – Sunday 8th September 2024 4:00pm
God's House Tower, Town Quay Road, Southampton, SO14 2NY
They Will Not Take You Seriously is an exhibition created by the young people from the LGBTQIA+ DSLR 16-25 group working with In Focus Education and Development.
They will not take you seriously because you did not meet their expectations of you.
You failed to become everything they hoped or thought they knew you would become.
And so how could they possibly take you seriously?
Queer, trans, gay, non-binary, lesbian, autistic, ADHD, dyspraxic, depressed, anxious, cPTSD, bi, pan, questioning, confused and many more labels that simultaneously define and place you in a box of constraint, whilst liberating you to be that person you know you are.
And yet, we are still here.
Over the space of a year this group has explored through photography, creative writing, visual arts and discussion who we were, are, and might become in the future. Acknowledging our ability to see beyond the expected into the realm of possibility.
We have learnt and shared creative skills with one another and through an exchange of generosity and caring, evolved as individuals and a group – through respect, compassion and understanding. With an ability to shift and change as each of us does.
We invite you into that space with us now.
Witness our evolution, and experience some of your own.
This is an exhibition not only of inspection, but also self-reflection.
But either way it does not matter, for they will not take you seriously.
Join us on Friday 23rd August at God’s House Tower, 6pm – 9pm, to celebrate the launch of this new exhibition.
