Ripe Tomatoes Artist Profiles #06
Posted: 13/08/2020
Over the next few weeks we’re going to be introducing each of the artists involved in our upcoming exhibition, Ripe Tomatoes. Each post will include two artists, one graduate from Solent University (SU) and one from Winchester School of Art (WSA), University of Southampton. Today’s artists are Harry Joyce (WSA) and Victoria Rich (SU) – you can find out more about their practices by reading on!
Harry Joyce
Harry is interested in the expanded field of painting, stretching canvas over found materials and objects such as chicken wire and recycled wooden pallets. He uses oil pastels, paints, charcoal and clay in a process-led approach to mark-making. Recently he has been working in a shed, considering the artists’ studio as space for making and exhibiting work.
“The loss of my studio and sense of community due to the outbreak of Covid-19 has been replaced by a garden shed, occupied by imagined figures and faces. My Shed maquette, a replica of my new studio, is made from palette off-cuts, crude representations, the nails holding them together being ripped out and hammered back in, purposely artless.”
Victoria Rich
Victoria uses analog photography and darkroom manipulation techniques to create experimental images that challenge the conventions of traditional, representational photography. Referencing 19th and 20th century art movements such as Impressionism and Cubism, she creates abstract images of local landscapes and architectural structures.
“I combine a variety of manipulation techniques including layering, double exposure, printing on salt infused paper and the use of obscure angles while shooting/ printing within the darkroom. I remove the obvious narrative, utilising an ordinary subject matter so the amount of information present is reduced.”
