Mentor Mondays: Fatoş Üstek

Mentor Mondays is back this February, and we’re pleased to be joined by Independent Curator and Writer Fatoş Üstek.

For the February session, Fatoş will be offering support, advice and guidance for artists and art workers living or working in the SO postcode area. This opportunity would be particularly suited to those working in fields such as curation and writing in the arts sector.


How to Book

Mentor Mondays will take place on Monday 20th February 2023 between 9am – 12pm.

These sessions are free and open to those living and working in the SO postcode area. The 1-to-1’s will take place online via Zoom and you will be sent a link ahead of your session. There are only three sessions available so early booking is advised to avoid missing out.


About the Mentor

Fatoş Üstek is an independent curator and writer, based in London. Ustek is co-founder of FRANK Fair Artist Pay with artists Anne Hardy and Lindsay Seers, curator of Frieze Sculpture 2023. She was previously Director of the Liverpool Biennial, Director of the Roberts Institute of Art, Curator of Art Night, London (2017), Curator of fig-2 50 exhibitions 50 weeks, at ICA London (2015) and Associate Curator of the 10th Gwangju Biennial, South Korea (2014). She has commissioned a number of projects in the public realm, including Nathan Coley, Liverpool, 2020; Do Ho Suh, London, 2018-20 and presently with Nine Elms, London. Over the past 10 years, Üstek has taken on multiple jury roles for national and international art prizes (Jindrich Chalupecky Award 2022-2024; Outset Studio Makers Prize, 2022; Turner Prize 2020; Celeste Prize 2017), international representations (Scotland and Netherlands in Venice, 2022), whilst nominating artists for prestigious projects and awards (The Fourth Plinth; Jarman Film Award).

In addition, Üstek is Editorial Advisor and Contributing Editor of Extra Extra Magazine and co-founder of FRANK Fair Artist Pay. Alongside leading international projects, she holds governance roles in art organizations in the UK (Chair, New Contemporaries), Netherlands (advisory board, Jan van Eyck Academie), and Germany (advisory board, Urban Art in Ruhr). Üstek is currently writing a book on 21st-century art institutions.

About Mentor Mondays

Part of ‘a space’ arts expanded Artist Voices Programme, Mentor Mondays invites visual arts professionals from across the UK to hold zoom 1-to-1 sessions with artists & artworkers from the SO postcode area.

On one Monday of every month we will offer three 45 minute 1-to-1 sessions on zoom which will be available to book on a first come first serve basis.

1-to-1s will be led by mentors with wide-ranging professional visual arts experience: curating, writing, fundraising, publishing, commercial art and more. These sessions are designed to support with critical feedback on work, funding advice, and developing career strategies.
