The multi-media group exhibition Air Data Scape presents four artists’ works on air pollution in Southampton. The invisible violence of air pollution is here made visible through the artworks. Atsuhide Ito ran Southampton Marathon while collecting air pollution data every 2 minutes and turned the data into kinetic sculptures resembling Japanese origami wind wheels. Sian Chungh presents a diorama of three-dimensional environments in which she had originally walked while collecting data. Aster Cook has produced a prosthetic set of lungs that can be expanded or contracted by a foot pump. Agalya Kumaraguruparasharma’s map of pollution is made with finger prints, indicating personalisation of data. Those art works combine citizen science and data collection, while data is crucial in sensing and recording one’s local environment. The exhibition also showcases experiential ways in which the invisible forces are made accessible and knowable to a wider public to create awareness on environmental problems living in a city.
