Join us on Friday 7th February at God’s House Tower (GHT) as we decide which community-focused, global majority-led project in Southampton will win a £2,000 bursary and an exhibition at GHT in October this year.

Hear directly from the brilliant people behind creative community projects in your local area. From painting to singing, cooking and crafting, there are so many groups and gatherings in Southampton that deserve more funding and more support.

This is an opportunity for you to find out more about what they do and why they do it.

Plus, you can play your part in their future by voting for the project you’d like to see awarded the funding.

Sounds of Indian Music by Pooja Angra: 

This exciting project invites musicians from wide music traditions to work with a leading Indian Classical singer – Dr. Pooja Angra to learn the concept of Raga, Bhava (emotion) and Taal (rhythm pattern). The musicians will have a hands-on experience singing or playing a Raaga on their instrument through a series of workshops. An opportunity for musicians to work in a collaborative space to confluence Indian and wider music traditions. The project will culminate with a public performance of the piece created together, followed by a concert of an Indian singer and a tabla drummer during BHM.

The Anti-Racism & Empowerment Programme by Helena Boyce (YOUbuntu): 

A transformative six-week initiative working with students of colour from two central Southampton secondary schools. Through dynamic workshops, students will explore identity, history, and empowerment while cultivating confidence, leadership, and advocacy skills. A compelling documentary-style film will amplify their voices as they ask bold, thought-provoking questions and share their lived experiences. This film, showcased at God’s House Tower, will challenge stereotypes and celebrate the positive contributions of people of colour in the UK through impactful statistics and storytelling. This programme seeks to spark meaningful change, promote inclusivity, and inspire the next generation of anti-racism leaders.

This Is the Docks – Through our Eyes by Antonio Chikhungu:

This project is a film and exhibition celebrating Southampton’s cultural identity through the lens of its creatives. As a cultural producer passionate about exploring identity and sociological influences on art, Antonio aims to bridge generations and foster community cohesion. The film combines narrative storytelling, intergenerational dialogues, and a documentary-style exploration of local artists, creating an audio-visual ethos for the city. Presented at God’s House Tower, the project fuses music and visual art, inviting audiences to engage with Southampton’s creative spirit while sparking collaboration across diverse perspectives.

ODDjects by Vera Chiu:

ODDjects is a creative journey for newcomers to Southampton, exploring belonging and identity through art. In this series of intimate workshops, participants will dive into expressive painting, gel printing, and a charity shop treasure hunt to transform emotions, memories, and found objects into meaningful creations. The project culminates in a vibrant pop-up exhibition, where participants share their stories and artworks through guided tours and storytelling circles—a celebration of individuality and the beauty of finding a home in a new community.

Create and Connect: Empowering Creative Bonds Among Women in Southampton by Ren Wooldridge: 

This community-driven project empowers and unites creative women through skill-sharing workshops. Participants learn hands-on art crafts skill guided by local women artists. The initiative fosters connections through shared creativity, storytelling, and collaboration, celebrating the diversity of women’s talents. Together, it builds a supportive network for sustainable growth and inspiration in Southampton.

Each community leader will have 10 minutes to pitch their project at the event after which the voting will officially begin from 8th February until 14th February. 

These pitches will also be recorded and uploaded to the ‘a space’ arts YouTube Channel to give online audiences a chance to watch these pitches and cast their votes.
