'A Sound Journey to Freedom' launches this weekend at GHT

With our 2022 programme well underway, we’re thrilled to be launching a though-provoking new exhibition this January at our flagship Venue, God’s House Tower.

Brought to the city by Phantom Limb and Noise in Yangon, with thanks to funding from British Council, ’A Sound Journey to Freedom’ is a collaborative exhibition of musical ideas expressed through visual arts by artists from Myanmar and the UK, responding to and highlighting the ongoing situation in Myanmar – and celebrating the exciting experimental arts community in the country.

Myanmar has been under military rule since February 2021. Many people there are engaged in an ongoing civil disobedience movement and various peaceful protests. Despite the challenges of everyday life in the country – with banks no longer functioning, and schools not open to students, alongside the great sense of disappointment among young people who have lost the freedoms they had enjoyed in 10 years of relative democracy – the spirit amongst the artistic community remains vibrant and undiminished.

Where arguably an appropriate response from government leaders and the wider international community to the situation in Myanmar is lacking, ‘A Sound Journey to Freedom’ aims to create the conditions for empathy, understanding and action through visual art, exhibition and musical performance.

You’ll also have the opportunity to create your own audio and musical responses to the exhibited works as we look to amplify the conversation around the situation in Myanmar in an effort to fill the void where the response from Western society is largely absent. These additional works will be recorded and made available on the Phantom Limb website, with selected pieces performed at the closing celebration on Saturday 19th February.

The exhibition is open at GHT from Friday 21st January until Sunday 20th February 2022. Admission is free. Find out more about the project and artists involved here.

We will also be celebrating the exhibition at a closing event on Saturday 19th February from 6pm, where visitors will be able to meet some of the artists involved and find out more about the project, as well as enjoying exclusive performances.  Stay tuned for more details!

‘A Sound Journey to Freedom’ will conclude with two performances of a programme of selected audio/visual responses at Southampton Mayflower Studios Theatre (MAST) on May 27th and 28th, featuring: Apartment House, Benjamin Oliver, Kim Macari, Kam Seng Aung, Miedo Total, more TBC + very special guests.
