Announcing our new Artist-led Networks

Following a successful open call for local artist groups created and led by visual artists from the Southampton area, we’re delighted to be welcoming Studio without walls and Throes of Grief to our growing community of Artist-led Networks (previously known as Peer Networks). Led by Network Champions Annabel Pettigrew (Throes of Grief) and Vanessa Rolf (Studio without walls), the opportunity will support the networks, allow for greater outreach with the wider arts community in the region and provide more opportunities for local artists to engage and develop ideas with their peers.

About Studio without walls

‘Studio without walls’ is a group of artists, living and working in and around Winchester, sharing their practice through making, walking, talking, reading and thinking together. They explore new directions in approach, generate supporting networks and act as a safe space to challenge the potential in their work.

The peer groups’ focus is on sharing artistic approaches to researching and developing work, supporting access to resources and experimenting with processes, rather than critiquing outcomes. Practical making explorations, site trips or directed discussions led by members of the group aim to open new dialogues and encourage self initiated activities.

‘Studio without walls’ addresses limited studio provision or a hub that facilitates connections in the area. The network aims to build opportunities to grow a sustainable inclusive creative community.

About Throes of Grief

Throes of Grief (TOG) is an artist led collective research initiative exploring both the presence and themes of Grief in contemporary art practice. Founded by Annabel Pettigrew in 2020, following an open call and a round of initial in-depth conversations with applicants, a group of eight artists were selected to take part as participants.

Participants currently meet online for discussion, presentation of work, peer critique and workshops. In doing so contribute to collaborative research and critical development of practice. Participants are encouraged to engage with the presence of grief within work and practice, and examine any conceptual themes to further the critical underpinning or development of the work the artists make. Annabel will be releasing an open call for SO artists to join Throes of Grief over the coming weeks. More details coming soon.
