Meet the latest Making Room resident artist, Emmanuel Boateng
Posted: 04/07/2022
Earlier this year we announced the successful recipients of the Making Room Residency, a fully-funded three-month studio residency at the Arches Studios for artists from underrepresented backgrounds, and we’re pleased to welcome our second artist Emmanuel Boateng, who will start his residency this July.
Emmanuel is a Southampton-based multidisciplinary artist who is interested in layers and processes of traditional Kente weaving, and how that can be re-imagined. He adopts fragments from traditional weaving and creates paintings and installations that challenge notions of race and black representation in contemporary artistic practice. For Emmanuel, a key part of his practice is developing it as a vehicle for decolonising imperial ways of seeing in art spaces.
On starting the residency, Emmanuel said “This residency with ‘a space’ arts is an opportunity for me to collaborate and engage in discourse and practices with local artists and audiences, and explore ideas around place, non-place, and audience participation.”
Make sure you follow Emmanuel on social media to keep up with the latest from his residency.
